ABOUT

THE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH

Drama

1943. Deep in the jungle of a Japanese POW camp, on the Thailand-Burma Railway, Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans is haunted by the memory of his all too brief love affair with his uncle's wife, Amy Mulvaney. It is a memory that sustains him as he fights to preserve life in a world beset with death. Dorrigo and Amy's love is born years earlier when we witness the couple meet and from that moment on, Amy is never far from Dorrigo's mind for the rest of his life, despite his long-lasting marriage to Ella Evans, clandestine affair with Lynette Maison, and life- altering friendship with fellow soldier, Frank Gardiner. Adapted from Richard Flanagan's Man Booker Prize-winning novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North is many things; a timeless love story; an intimate character study; a culture clash depicting both sides of a conflict, and an honest portrayal a long-lasting marriage. The Narrow Road to the Deep North weaves together multiple time periods, to create the sum of one man's life. We journey from Dorrigo's beginnings as a medical student in Melbourne, to his wartime hardships in Southeast Asia, and to his later years as a revered surgeon in 1980's Sydney. In each stage of Dorrigo’s life, this landmark series examines a different form of love. Pre-war, it is the life-altering love between a man and a woman. During the war, it is the life-saving love between Dorrigo and his fellow prisoners. And, finally, Post-war, we bear witness to the dutiful love between Dorrigo and his wife of over forty years, Ella. Set against the shadow of World War II, the series is unflinching in, both, its depiction of the brutality war and the intimacy and passion of young love. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a savagely beautiful television series celebrating the importance of hope and reminding us that humanity only survives history's darkest days through the power of love.
