Sony Pictures Acquires Virtual Production Software Company Nurulize

Advanced Software Technology Expands Possibilities for Entertainment Experiences

[Culver City, CA – July 8, 2019] – Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) today announced that Sony Innovation Studios Inc., a division of SPE, recently acquired Nurulize, a software development house which specializes in delivering creative realism and enabling virtual production of content. Nurulize will now be part of Sony Innovation Studios, a state-of-the-art facility that launched last year on the Sony Pictures Studios lot. The advanced software technology from Nurulize will further strengthen Sony Innovation Studios’ virtual production workflow for film, television, gaming and other platforms across Sony companies – and the broader industry – to help create a variety of immersive entertainment experiences.

SPE has used Nurulize’s cutting-edge technology on several projects, including capturing a virtual model of the Men in Black™: International movie set in the United Kingdom, covering 52,000 square feet.  That MIB virtual set was used for this NBA Finals co-promotion, shot in Culver City, California, and aired on ESPN and ABC. By using the virtual set, enabled by the use of Sony Innovation Studios’ volumetric video capture and Nurulize’s software, producers were able to save on overseas travel costs, set decoration and time.  The software technology helped achieve a nearly impossible mission – collapsing geography and re-creating a set that had already been dismantled.  This same process was also used in creating a virtual model of the exit interview set on “Shark Tank” last year earning Sony Innovation Studios an Advanced Imaging Society Award for Best Use of Virtual Production.

Glenn Gainor, head of physical production for Screen Gems and President of Sony Innovation Studios, commented: “As a creative entertainment company built on a foundation of technology, every day we seek to push the boundaries in how we tell great stories.  The software technology developed by Nurulize, called Atom View, enables us to integrate the highest-quality volumetric data capture with traditional workflows for film, television, and gaming, ushering a new method of content creation – the blending of the digital and the real –in truly innovative ways.”

Dell Technologies, Deloitte Digital and Intel Corporation are collaborating with Sony Innovation Studios and will play an integral role in helping to expand the application of virtual production workflow beyond entertainment to new industries and experiences.
