"The Eden Project" Finds Its Paradise As Material Lands The Film At Sony Pictures

CULVER CITY, Calif., September 26, 2014 - Sony Pictures Entertainment has closed a deal for The Eden Project, a spec script by Christina Hodson. Material principals Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe brought the project to the studio and will produce. Hannah Minghella, president of Production for Columbia Pictures, orchestrated the deal for the studio in a highly competitive situation and will oversee the project.

This marks the second major score for Material in recent weeks, following the sale of their film Pawn Sacrifice to Bleecker Street after a very successful world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Logline for The Eden Project is being kept under wraps, but the script is the first in a conceived trilogy. It is a sci-fi action film centered around two female characters.

Hodson first drew attention with her screenplay Shut In, which was one of the top scripts on the 2012 Black List and was acquired by David Linde's Lava Bear. Her script Seed landed on The Black List the following year and will be produced by Marty Bowen and Peter Safran. Most recently, Hodson wrote the erotic thriller Unforgettable for Warner Bros., which Denise DiNovi will produce and Amma Asante (Belle) will direct.

In addition to Pawn Sacrifice, Material is in post-production on the Craig Zobel-directed Z for Zachariah, starring Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine. Next up for Material is The 5th Wave, also for Sony Pictures; that project, based on the acclaimed, bestselling novel by Rick Yancey, will be directed by J Blakeson and will star Chloë Grace Moretz and Liev Schreiber.

Hodson is represented by CAA, Tobin Babst at Kaplan/Perrone, and Melanie Cook and Jamie Affifi at Ziffren, Brittenham, LLP.

Material is represented by WME, Management 360, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush and Kaller LLP with the deal handled by WME's Warren Zavala & Sarah Self and Barry Littman & Gretchen Rush of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush and Kaller LLP.
